Gravel drives to concrete on Perry's larger lots
Perry is the county seat and the south end of Houston County, and lots get bigger away from downtown. Many Perry requests come from owners of acreage off US 41 and Houston Lake Road who are done grading a gravel drive every spring. Three things make that job different.
- The gravel you have is not a base. It is thin, mixed with clay, and rutted in the wheel paths. We scrape the ruts, add crusher run, compact it in lifts, and pour 4 inches of 4,000 psi concrete, or 5 where a tractor or a loaded trailer will run.
- Water has somewhere new to go. Gravel soaks up rain; a long slab sheds it to the low point. A swale on the uphill side or a pipe under the drive costs little while the forms are open.
- You can pour it in stages. Concrete the first 40 to 60 feet from the road, where the mud is worst, at the same per-foot rate.
A standard driveway is covered on the concrete driveways page and priced in the driveway cost guide.
Shop slabs, patios and walks around town
- Older streets near downtown. Walks and driveways poured decades ago, thin and without steel, cracked into blocks and dropped at the street. Most are tear-out and re-pour jobs. Where one panel has settled, foam leveling at $600 to $2,500 is the cheaper fix.
- Newer subdivisions off US 41 and Houston Lake Road. Sound but narrow driveways, so the call is for a parking pad or a widened side, or a patio where the builder left a stoop.
- Acreage. Slabs for workshops, equipment sheds and metal buildings, poured monolithic with a thickened edge and anchor bolts set to the supplier's drawing. A 24 by 24 garage slab runs $4,200 to $6,500.
- Trailer pads. If you haul to the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter, the pad the gooseneck lives on is poured at 5 inches.

Permits: City of Perry or Houston County
Perry issues its own permits inside the city limits. An address with a Perry mailing address but outside the line falls under Houston County Building Inspection, 200 Carl Vinson Parkway, Warner Robins, GA 31088, (478) 542-2018, and we find out which applies before the quote goes out. Houston County Building Inspection handles unincorporated county addresses. The City of Warner Robins, Centerville and Perry issue their own permits inside city limits. Replacing a driveway in the same footprint is usually exempt. A new or widened curb cut on a public road needs an encroachment permit. A new entrance onto US 41 involves the Georgia DOT as well, because it is a state route, so we start that approval first.
Clay, heat and haul times in Perry
The red clay that cracks slabs across Houston County runs right through Perry. It swells in a wet March and shrinks in a dry August, and a slab poured straight on it rides along. So we dig to firm ground, replace soft clay with stone, compact in two lifts, and proofroll with a loaded truck before forms go up. Rebar sits on chairs, and control joints are saw-cut at 8 to 10 feet the same day.
Heat is the other factor. Concrete that rides in a drum for 45 minutes at 95 degrees loses slump and gets hard to finish; the plant on Industrial Park Drive keeps that ride short, and in summer we schedule Perry pours for first light.
Questions we get asked
Does Perry cost more because it is farther from Warner Robins?
No. Perry has its own ready-mix plant and the price list is identical to Warner Robins.
Can you concrete part of a long gravel driveway now and the rest later?
Yes. We pour the section nearest the road first with a square end and a keyway, and tie the next pour into it when you are ready, at the same per-foot rate.
Do I need a permit for a shop slab in Perry?
The slab is usually covered by the building permit for the shop itself, from the City of Perry inside the city limits or Houston County Building Inspection outside them. We confirm for your address.
How thick should a slab be for a tractor or a loaded trailer?
Five inches of 4,000 psi concrete with rebar over 4 inches of compacted stone. Going from 4 to 5 inches adds roughly 15 percent to the concrete cost.
