Permits work differently in Byron
Byron is the one town we serve outside Houston County, and the paperwork changes with the county line. Inside the Byron city limits, permits come from the City of Byron. Outside them, from Peach County. Houston County Building Inspection has nothing to do with a Byron address, and we do not assume Houston County's exemptions carry over. For any Byron job that touches the street or involves a structure, we call the office that covers your address before the quote goes out.
In general, a same-footprint driveway replacement is not a permit matter in either jurisdiction, a new or widened entrance onto a public road is, and on a state route the Georgia DOT is involved too.
Gravel to concrete in pecan and peach country
Peach County is orchard land, and many Byron homes sit at the end of a gravel drive that runs 200 feet or more from the road. We pour those drives 10 to 12 feet wide, 4 inches thick for cars and 5 where a tractor or a loaded trailer will run, with a turnaround where there is room.
The existing gravel is almost never usable as a base on its own; it is thin and full of fines, so we scrape the ruts and bring in crusher run before the plate compactor touches it. The drive also usually crosses a roadside ditch, and the culvert there has to be sound before concrete goes over it. Owners who want to spread the cost pour from the road inward in sections at the same per-foot rate. The driveways page covers the build sequence, and the cost guide shows how length and width move the total.
Sandier ground toward the Fall Line
Byron sits nearer the Fall Line than anywhere else we work, and lots north and west of town are sandier than Houston County's red clay. Sand drains, compacts easily, and does not swell and shrink with the seasons, so the base goes in faster and the subgrade rarely needs digging out.
Sand has one habit of its own. It washes. Where a downspout or a yard swale hits the edge of a slab, sand erodes from under it and the edge drops or breaks. So on sandy lots we thicken the slab edges, run downspouts past the concrete, and shape the grade so water leaves across the face of the slab. South and east of town, toward Centerville, the clay comes back. We do not guess at base depth from a soil map; we dig test holes at the site visit. In summer we pour early, mist the surface, and apply a white-pigmented curing compound. You can walk on it next day, park a car after 7 days, and it reaches design strength at 28 days.
Older houses in town, new builds on the edges
- Older homes near downtown. Thin front walks, driveway aprons broken up at the road, and carport slabs that are spalled on top but sound underneath. Where the slab is solid, resurfacing at $4 to $8 per square foot gives a new wearing surface for a fraction of replacement. Where it has broken into pieces, it comes out and gets re-poured.
- New builds off I-75 and the county roads. The same pattern as Kathleen: a usable driveway and a back door that opens onto grass. Patios, side walks and shed slabs are the regular calls, and a 24 by 24 detached garage slab runs $4,200 to $6,500.

Questions we get asked
You are based in Warner Robins. Do you really cover Byron?
Yes. Byron is a 15-minute drive up I-75, the crews that pour Centerville pour Byron, and there is no travel charge.
Who issues my permit in Byron?
The City of Byron inside the city limits, Peach County outside them. Houston County is not involved. We confirm which one covers your address before quoting.
Does sandy soil make the job cheaper?
Sometimes a little. Sandy lots need less excavation, which can put the quote toward the low end of the range. Concrete, steel and finishing cost the same.
Can you pour a 300-foot driveway in one day?
Usually, if a truck can reach the forms along its length. Very long or steep drives are poured in two sections on consecutive days.
Do you go beyond Byron into the rest of Peach County?
Byron is the northern edge of our standard area. If you are a few miles past it, send the address with your quote request and we will tell you yes or no the same day.
Get a written quote
Tell us what you need and where. Sandhill Concrete matches your project with a licensed Houston County concrete contractor, who measures on site, writes the quote and does the work. You hear back within one business day by text or email with a site-visit window, and the written quote states thickness, reinforcement, base and removal so you can compare it line by line.
